Cécile had a letter that proved there was still treasure hidden in this house? She passed me a single page, yellow with age and folded into thirds. A red wax blob with the impression of a shield bearing a coat of arms had once sealed it. It was written in the old dialetto toscano, penned in a beautiful hand, but left unsigned.

“You can probably read it with little trouble,” Cécile said. “But Renzo provided a translation as well.” She handed me a second sheet, this one gleaming white, its words in English:

Signore,

I have made all the arrangements you requested. No one will ever suspect the passage is there, let alone be able to locate it. I agree to meet you as your letter described.
